Avangrid and Amazon expand US partnership with wind PPA
Avangrid and Amazon have expanded their partnership in the U.S. with a new wind power purchase agreement (PPA) in Gilliam County, Oregon. The agreement involves Avangrid's 98.4 MW Amazon Wind Farm Oregon – Leaning Juniper IIA.
Avangrid CEO Pedro Azagra highlighted the project's alignment with both companies' renewable energy goals, its job creation, and local community benefits. Amazon's Abhishek Sharma emphasized the significance of this project as Amazon's first utility-scale renewable energy initiative in Oregon, adding to Amazon's 2 GW renewable capacity in the western U.S.
The project, involving the upgrade of 40 turbines, will enhance efficiency, extend the farm's operational life, and power approximately 22,800 homes annually while creating 200 construction jobs. Avangrid plans to recycle decommissioned turbine blades, avoiding over 1000 tons of landfill waste.
The initiative is part of a broader strategy to leverage the Inflation Reduction Act for repowering existing wind assets, improving energy generation efficiency, and extending community benefits through the Avangrid Community Sponsorship Program. This project will continue to support local services with over $11 million in property taxes already contributed, benefiting education and safety.
