Stellantis adds 2 MW of solar to its Gurun plant in Malaysia

Leading automaker Stellantis recently announced a partnership with C&I solar solutions provider Leader Energy to expand solar power generation at its Gurun plant in Malaysia. The collaboration covers the financing, installation, operation and maintenance of the solar PV systems as well as the improvement of energy efficiency in the Gurun plant’s operations. Leader Solar Sdn Bhd (LSSB), a Malaysia-based subsidiary of Leader Energy, managed the project. It was commissioned in October 2022 and is expected to reach a maximum capacity of 2,189.81 kW and generate over 50 GWh of electricity over the next 21 years, which can satisfy around 34% of the Gurun plant’s annual electricity consumption and cut down 1963.4 tons of carbon emissions. Stellantis positions building sustainable and profitable business models at its core in its latest Dare Forward 2030 strategy. “We are excited to work with partners like Leader Energy that help us contribute to the fight against climate change. This partnership is a positive step for the ASEAN region and will assist Stellantis in achieving its industry-leading target of carbon net zero by 2038,” said Christophe Musy, a head of distribution departments at Stellantis.

Beyond the energy transition in the ASEAN market, Stellantis partnered with U.S.-based DTE Energy last month to add 400 MW of new solar capacity through a PPA, enabling Stellantis to replace 100% of its electricity use at its Michigan facilities with solar by 2026. The company also installed solar PV systems at its Mangualde plant in Portugal. With over 20 years of operations in the power sector, Leader Energy has to date more than 1,000 MW of operating power plants in the Asia Pacific. The company is committed to “driving Malaysia’s agenda of achieving 31% renewable energy mix by 2025 and 40% by 2035,” said Izwan Rasul, Country Manager of LSSB.
